ADA KUMU ST-01 - Ryuoh Stone
The ADA KUMU ST-01 – Ryuoh Stone is a decorative aquascaping rock set created by Aqua Design Amano (ADA) as part of the KUMU Layout Materials series, designed for use in nature aquariums, planted tanks, and paludariums. This kit contains carefully selected pieces of Ryuoh Stone, also known in the aquascaping hobby as Dragon Stone, one of the most popular hardscape materials used in modern aquascaping.
Ryuoh Stone is highly valued for its distinctive rugged texture and natural erosion patterns, featuring intricate holes and layered surfaces that resemble weathered cliffs and mountains. These unique characteristics make it ideal for creating dramatic aquascapes that replicate natural landscapes, such as mountain valleys, canyon-style layouts, or classic Iwagumi-style compositions.
The ADA KUMU ST-01 set contains approximately 300g of small Ryuoh Stone pieces, making it perfect for nano aquariums, detail work, and finishing touches in larger aquascapes. These smaller rocks are often used to complement larger main stones, helping aquascapers create natural transitions, reinforce perspective, and add realism to the layout.
One of the most important aspects of professional aquascaping is the ability to build a natural sense of scale and depth. Smaller accent stones like those included in the ST-01 kit allow aquascapers to create gradual size variation within the hardscape. This technique helps simulate distance and perspective, making aquariums appear larger and more natural.
Ryuoh Stone is also popular because it is relatively inert in water, meaning it typically has minimal impact on aquarium water parameters. This makes it suitable for most planted aquariums and community fish setups when properly rinsed before use.
The KUMU Layout Materials series was developed by ADA to give aquascapers more creative freedom when designing natural aquarium layouts. These curated material sets allow hobbyists to experiment with composition, layering, and detail placement without needing to source individual stones.
Because the pieces in the ST-01 kit are smaller, they are especially useful for:
• Detailing around primary hardscape stones
• Stabilizing rock structures
• Creating natural transitions between substrate and rock formations
• Enhancing perspective in aquascapes
• Adding texture to foreground and midground areas
The stones maintain the authentic appearance of traditional Ryuoh Stone, with natural gray and earthy tones that blend beautifully with aquatic plants, mosses, and carpeting species.
Whether used in a nano aquascape, nature aquarium, or detailed planted tank layout, the ADA KUMU ST-01 – Ryuoh Stone kit provides aquascapers with high-quality decorative stones that help create more realistic and visually balanced aquascapes.
