Stocking Guidelines

The "Inch Per Gallon" Rule

This classic rule suggests 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. While not perfect, it's a good starting point. Our calculator adjusts for filter type to give you more accurate recommendations.

Important Considerations

  • Use adult size when calculating - fish grow!
  • Consider fish body shape: slim fish (tetras) vs. heavy-bodied fish (goldfish)
  • Territorial species need more space than schooling fish
  • Better filtration allows higher stocking density
  • Planted tanks can support more fish due to natural filtration

Red Flags

  • Fish gasping at the surface (low oxygen)
  • Ammonia or nitrite spikes
  • Aggressive behavior due to overcrowding
  • Stunted growth
