Stocking Guidelines
The "Inch Per Gallon" Rule
This classic rule suggests 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. While not perfect, it's a good starting point. Our calculator adjusts for filter type to give you more accurate recommendations.
Important Considerations
- Use adult size when calculating - fish grow!
- Consider fish body shape: slim fish (tetras) vs. heavy-bodied fish (goldfish)
- Territorial species need more space than schooling fish
- Better filtration allows higher stocking density
- Planted tanks can support more fish due to natural filtration
Red Flags
- Fish gasping at the surface (low oxygen)
- Ammonia or nitrite spikes
- Aggressive behavior due to overcrowding
- Stunted growth
