Sarcophyton sp.
The Toadstool Leather Coral (Sarcophyton sp.) is one of the most recognizable and beginner-friendly soft corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Named for its distinctive mushroom or toadstool-like shape, this coral features a thick central stalk topped by a wide, circular cap covered with countless tiny polyps. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Toadstool Leather Corals are commonly found in shallow reef environments where moderate currents and stable lighting conditions support their growth.
Toadstool Leather Coral belongs to the soft coral family, meaning it does not produce a hard calcium skeleton like SPS or LPS corals. Instead, its structure is supported by microscopic skeletal elements called sclerites, which give the coral flexibility while maintaining its overall shape. This flexible body allows the coral to sway gently in the water flow, creating beautiful natural movement in reef aquariums.
When fully extended, the coral’s cap becomes covered with hundreds of long, soft polyps that give it a fuzzy or textured appearance. These polyps extend during the day to capture nutrients and perform photosynthesis. The coral typically displays colors such as tan, beige, cream, green, or light brown, and under blue reef lighting many specimens develop subtle fluorescent tones.
One unique behavior of Toadstool Leather Coral is its periodic shedding process. From time to time, the coral retracts its polyps and develops a thin waxy film over its surface. This is completely normal and helps the coral remove algae and debris before reopening with fresh polyp extension.
Toadstool Leather Coral is considered very hardy and adaptable, making it an excellent choice for beginner reef aquariums. It tolerates a wide range of tank conditions and generally thrives in both mixed reefs and soft coral aquariums.
For optimal growth, the coral prefers moderate lighting and moderate water flow. Proper water movement helps remove debris and encourages healthy polyp extension.
Recommended water parameters include:
Temperature: 24–26°C (75–79°F)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH
Calcium: 380–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1200–1350 ppm
Toadstool Leather Coral is photosynthetic, relying primarily on symbiotic zooxanthellae algae for energy. However, it can also absorb dissolved nutrients from the water column.
Another advantage of this coral is its ease of propagation. The coral can be fragged by cutting pieces of the cap, which can then be attached to new rocks to form additional colonies. This makes it a favorite among reef hobbyists who enjoy coral propagation.
With its unique shape, flowing polyps, and resilient nature, the Toadstool Leather Coral is a classic addition to reef aquariums, adding movement, texture, and natural beauty to marine aquascapes.
