Silver Tip Tetra

Hasemania nana

The Silver Tip Tetra, scientifically known as Hasemania nana, is a vibrant and energetic freshwater fish that brings constant movement and shimmering contrast to planted aquariums. Native to small streams and tributaries in Brazil, this species is highly appreciated in the aquascaping world for its metallic body tones and distinctive white-tipped fins, which create a subtle but eye-catching sparkle under aquarium lighting.

This tetra features a streamlined, laterally compressed body with a warm golden to copper base coloration. Depending on lighting and water conditions, its body can display shades ranging from pale champagne to deep amber. The defining characteristic of the Silver Tip Tetra is the bright white or silvery tips on its dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. These reflective edges create a flashing effect when the fish swims in a school, making it an excellent choice for dynamic, nature-style aquascapes.

Reaching an average size of around 4 to 5 cm (1.5 to 2 inches), the Silver Tip Tetra is well-suited for small to medium-sized aquariums. Its compact size allows it to maintain proper scale within densely planted layouts, especially in aquascapes that use fine-leaved stem plants, mosses, and delicate carpeting species. In well-balanced compositions, a school of Silver Tip Tetras adds life without overwhelming the hardscape or plant details.

Behaviorally, this species is active and social. It thrives in groups of at least six individuals, though larger schools produce more natural and confident behavior. When kept in sufficient numbers, they display synchronized swimming patterns that enhance depth and realism in aquascapes. Their constant midwater activity contrasts beautifully with static elements such as driftwood, rocks, and rooted plants.

Silver Tip Tetras are hardy and adaptable, making them a good option for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions, with temperatures ranging between 22°C and 27°C (72°F to 80°F). Soft to moderately hard water is ideal. Stable water parameters and good filtration are important to maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.

In terms of diet, they are omnivorous and readily accept high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. A varied diet enhances their metallic sheen and keeps their fins crisp and bright. Proper nutrition also supports stronger schooling behavior and overall vitality.

From a design perspective, the Silver Tip Tetra works particularly well in natural aquascapes inspired by South American biotopes. Dark substrates and driftwood backgrounds intensify their warm body tones, while strategic lighting highlights the reflective fin tips. Their presence adds subtle brilliance without distracting from the overall layout, making them a versatile centerpiece for planted tanks.

Overall, the Silver Tip Tetra is an excellent freshwater fish for aquascaping enthusiasts seeking movement, contrast, and reliability. Its shimmering fin tips, golden body, and lively schooling behavior make it a timeless addition to any well-designed planted aquarium.
