Serpae Tetra

Hyphessobrycon eques

The Serpae Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques) is a striking freshwater fish admired for its intense red coloration and bold personality. Native to slow-moving rivers and tributaries of the Amazon basin in South America, this species is a favorite among aquascaping enthusiasts who want to add vibrant contrast and dynamic movement to planted aquariums. Its deep ruby-red body, accented by a distinctive black shoulder spot just behind the gill plate, creates a dramatic focal point against lush green aquatic plants.

In a well-designed aquascape, the Serpae Tetra truly stands out. The contrast between its fiery hues and soft green mosses, carpeting plants, and stem varieties enhances the overall visual balance of the aquarium. When illuminated by natural-looking LED lighting, the fish’s scales shimmer with subtle gradients of red and orange, giving it a lifelike, almost glowing appearance. This makes it especially popular in nature-style and Dutch-style planted tanks.

Serpae Tetras typically grow to about 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches) in length, making them ideal for small to medium-sized aquariums. They thrive in groups of at least six or more individuals, as schooling helps reduce aggression and encourages natural behavior. In larger schools, their synchronized swimming adds movement and depth to aquascapes, creating a visually captivating underwater scene.

Water parameters play an important role in maintaining their health and coloration. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0–7.5), soft to moderately hard water, and temperatures between 22–28°C (72–82°F). Stable conditions, good filtration, and regular water changes help maintain their vibrant coloration and active temperament.

Although beautiful, Serpae Tetras can display mild fin-nipping behavior, particularly in small groups or when kept with slow-moving fish. They are best housed with similarly sized, active tank mates such as other tetras, rasboras, or peaceful bottom dwellers like Corydoras. Providing dense planting and visual barriers in an aquascape helps reduce stress and territorial behavior.

Feeding is simple, as they readily accept high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. A varied diet enhances their coloration and overall vitality. In optimal conditions, their red pigmentation becomes even more intense, making them one of the most eye-catching species in a planted aquarium.

For aquascapers seeking a bold splash of color combined with energetic schooling behavior, the Serpae Tetra is an excellent choice. Its vivid tones, adaptability, and compatibility with lush planted layouts make it a timeless favorite in the freshwater aquarium hobby.
