Salvinia minima

Salvinia minima is a small floating aquatic fern widely appreciated in aquascaping and natural aquariums for its delicate appearance and functional benefits. Native to Central and South America, this species thrives on the water surface, forming dense mats of tiny, oval-shaped leaves that create a soft, natural canopy.

The plant consists of paired floating leaves covered in fine, water-repellent hairs, giving them a slightly textured, velvety look. These leaves range from light to medium green and often cluster tightly together, creating a lush, floating layer. Beneath the surface, Salvinia minima develops modified submerged leaves that resemble roots, providing shelter for microorganisms, fry, and shrimp.

This species is known for its rapid growth under favorable conditions, especially in aquariums with moderate to high lighting and nutrient-rich water. It helps reduce excess nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates, contributing to improved water quality and limiting algae growth. Its floating nature also provides shade, which can be beneficial for fish species that prefer dimmer environments.

Salvinia minima is extremely easy to care for and does not require substrate or CO₂ injection. However, it benefits from calm water conditions, as strong surface agitation can hinder its growth or cause it to break apart. Regular thinning is recommended to prevent it from completely covering the surface and blocking light from reaching submerged plants.

With its natural look and ecological benefits, Salvinia minima is an excellent choice for aquascapers seeking to create balanced, nature-inspired aquariums.
