Rotala rotundifolia 'H'ra'

Rotala rotundifolia 'H'ra'

In optimal conditions—moderate to high light, nutrient-rich substrate, and consistent CO₂ injection—‘H’ra’ develops slender stems with narrow, elongated leaves that transition beautifully in color. Lower portions of the plant often display softer green or light bronze tones, gradually shifting into vivid pinkish-red at the tips. This natural gradient effect makes it ideal for midground to background placement in nature-style and Dutch-style aquascapes.

Unlike overly dense hedge trims, a more natural growth pattern highlights its elegance. Slightly curved stems, uneven tip heights, and varied leaf spacing create depth and realism in aquascape layouts. When trimmed regularly, the plant becomes bushier and more compact, but allowing some irregular growth enhances movement and visual softness.

Rotala ‘H’ra’ responds strongly to lighting intensity. Higher PAR levels promote deeper red coloration, while nutrient balance—especially iron supplementation—supports vibrant pigmentation. Stable CO₂ levels help maintain compact internodal spacing and prevent legginess.

This species is relatively easy to propagate. Simply cut healthy tops and replant them into the substrate. Over time, side shoots develop from trimmed stems, creating fuller clusters. Regular trimming encourages dense yet dynamic growth, perfect for building layered compositions behind carpeting plants or in front of taller background species.

Because of its fine leaf structure and vivid coloration, Rotala ‘H’ra’ pairs exceptionally well with green carpeting plants such as Hemianthus callitrichoides or Eleocharis species, as well as darker background plants that accentuate its brightness.

In aquascaping design, it serves as an excellent color accent, focal transition plant, or gradient builder when combined with other Rotala varieties. Its lively tones and graceful stem movement bring energy and warmth to planted aquariums.
