Rotala indica 'Bonsai'
Rotala indica ‘Bonsai’ is a compact and highly structured stem plant that brings a refined yet natural appearance to aquascapes. Known for its small, rounded leaves and sturdy vertical stems, this variety creates dense bushes that resemble miniature terrestrial shrubs, making it ideal for creating midground accents or detailed foreground clusters in nature-style aquariums.
Unlike traditional Rotala species with elongated leaves, Rotala indica ‘Bonsai’ features tight leaf spacing and thicker stems, giving it a distinctive, architectural look. When grown under medium to high lighting, the upper leaves can develop subtle reddish or bronze hues, especially under nutrient-rich conditions and stable CO₂ injection. In lower light setups, it maintains a vibrant green coloration while still preserving its compact growth pattern.
This plant thrives in aquariums with consistent fertilization and CO₂ supplementation, though it can adapt to simpler setups with slower growth. Regular trimming is essential to maintain a bushy, irregular shape. Instead of cutting evenly across the top, selective trimming at different heights encourages a more natural, “messy” and organic appearance, avoiding a perfectly uniform hedge look. Replanting healthy cuttings into the substrate helps increase density and creates a layered effect with varied stem heights.
Rotala indica ‘Bonsai’ works beautifully in Iwagumi layouts, Dutch-style aquascapes, and nature aquariums. It pairs well with carpeting plants like Hemianthus callitrichoides or Glossostigma elatinoides, and contrasts elegantly with finer-leaf species such as Rotala rotundifolia or Limnophila species. When planted in loose clusters rather than tight geometric groups, it creates a dynamic, flowing composition that feels more authentic and less artificial.
Water parameters should ideally remain stable, with temperatures between 20–28°C (68–82°F), slightly acidic to neutral pH, and soft to moderately hard water. Stable conditions promote compact internodes and prevent leggy growth.
Because of its manageable size and controlled growth habit, Rotala indica ‘Bonsai’ is suitable for nano aquariums as well as larger display tanks. Its structured yet adaptable form makes it a favorite among aquascapers who want to introduce texture, depth, and subtle color variation without overwhelming the layout.
Whether used as a focal bush or blended into a layered plant composition, Rotala indica ‘Bonsai’ adds balance, detail, and a refined natural aesthetic to freshwater planted aquariums.
