Hyphessobrycon sweglesi
Red Phantom Tetra (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) is one of the most elegant and visually striking freshwater fish for planted aquariums and aquascaping layouts. Native to the slow-moving tributaries of the Orinoco River basin in Colombia, this small characin is admired for its warm reddish body tones, translucent fins, and the distinctive dark humeral spot located just behind the gill plate. When placed in a well-designed aquascape with natural driftwood, fine-leaf plants, and soft lighting, the Red Phantom Tetra becomes a glowing focal point that adds depth and movement to the underwater composition.
Growing to an average size of 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 inches), the Red Phantom Tetra is perfectly suited for nano aquariums and medium-sized planted tanks. Its compact body and slightly elongated dorsal fin—especially pronounced in males—give it a refined silhouette that contrasts beautifully against green aquatic plants such as Rotala, Ludwigia, Taxiphyllum mosses, and carpeting species. In aquascaping layouts inspired by natural biotopes, this species performs exceptionally well when kept in groups of at least six individuals, creating synchronized schooling behavior that enhances the sense of scale and realism in the tank.
Color intensity in Red Phantom Tetras depends heavily on water quality, diet, and lighting conditions. In soft, slightly acidic water with subdued but focused LED lighting, their copper-red hues become more saturated, while the black shoulder spot appears deeper and more defined. Subtle gradients of orange and red can be seen across the anal and caudal fins, especially in mature males during breeding displays. A nutrient-rich diet including high-quality micro pellets, frozen foods, and occasional live feedings will further intensify coloration and overall vitality.
From a husbandry perspective, Red Phantom Tetras are peaceful community fish that thrive in stable parameters: temperatures between 22–28°C (72–82°F), pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.5, and low to moderate water flow. In aquascaped tanks, they prefer areas with gentle current, shaded plant clusters, and open swimming space in the mid-water column. Dark substrates and dense background planting help them feel secure and naturally enhance their red pigmentation through visual contrast.
For aquascapers and freshwater hobbyists seeking a vibrant yet sophisticated schooling species, the Red Phantom Tetra offers the perfect balance between color, behavior, and adaptability. Its glowing red body against lush green aquascaping backgrounds creates a dynamic visual harmony that elevates any planted aquarium into a living underwater landscape.
