Phyllanthus fluitans

Phyllanthus fluitans, commonly known as Red Root Floater, is a highly sought-after floating plant in aquascaping, prized for its striking coloration and elegant appearance. Native to South America, this plant features small, round to slightly heart-shaped leaves that float gracefully on the water surface, often displaying vibrant green to deep reddish tones depending on conditions.

One of its most distinctive features is the intense red coloration it can develop under high lighting. When provided with strong light and nutrient-rich water, the leaves transition from green to shades of orange and deep red, while the roots hanging beneath the surface become a rich crimson color. These delicate, trailing roots not only enhance the visual appeal but also provide shelter for fish fry and shrimp.

Phyllanthus fluitans thrives in calm water with minimal surface agitation. Excessive flow can cause the plants to cluster or submerge, which may hinder healthy growth. It performs best under medium to high lighting, which is essential for achieving its signature red coloration. While CO₂ injection is not required, stable nutrient levels—especially iron—play a key role in maintaining vibrant colors.

As a floating plant, it absorbs nutrients directly from the water column, making regular liquid fertilization important. It also helps improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, reducing algae growth in the aquarium.

Maintenance is simple but necessary, as this plant multiplies quickly under favorable conditions. Regular thinning prevents overcrowding and ensures that light can reach plants below. Its fast growth and ability to provide shade make it useful for creating natural lighting gradients within the aquascape.

Phyllanthus fluitans is an excellent choice for adding contrast, color, and a natural floating layer to planted aquariums, making it especially popular in both nature-style and biotope setups.
