Neon Tetra

Paracheirodon innesi

The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is one of the most iconic and beloved freshwater aquarium fish in the world. Known for its brilliant iridescent blue stripe and vivid red coloration, this small schooling species brings movement, contrast, and natural elegance to planted aquariums. Native to the blackwater streams and tributaries of the Amazon Basin, Neon Tetras thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with subdued lighting and dense vegetation.

Reaching an average size of 3–4 cm (about 1.5 inches), Neon Tetras are ideal for nano tanks and large community aquariums alike. Their slender, torpedo-shaped bodies are designed for synchronized schooling, creating mesmerizing flashes of blue and red as they move together through aquatic plants. In a well-balanced aquascape, their colors appear even more intense under soft, diffused lighting that mimics their natural rainforest habitat.

Neon Tetras are peaceful and social fish that should always be kept in groups of at least six individuals, though larger schools of 10–20 produce a more natural and visually striking display. When housed in sufficient numbers, they exhibit confident swimming behavior and remain active in the midwater column. They coexist well with other small, non-aggressive species such as Corydoras, small Rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other gentle community fish.

Water parameters play a crucial role in maintaining vibrant coloration and long-term health. Ideal conditions include temperatures between 22–26°C (72–79°F), a pH range of 5.5–7.0, and soft to moderately soft water. Stability is more important than chasing exact numbers, as Neon Tetras are sensitive to sudden parameter shifts. A mature, well-cycled aquarium with stable filtration is essential for their wellbeing.

In aquascaping, Neon Tetras truly shine in natural planted layouts. Dense background plants, moss-covered driftwood, and textured stones create depth and provide security. Dark substrates and shaded areas enhance their metallic blue stripe, while gentle flow replicates the slow-moving waters of their native environment. A carefully scaled aquascape ensures the fish appear proportionate within the layout, preserving realism and visual harmony.

Feeding Neon Tetras is simple, as they readily accept high-quality micro pellets, flakes, and frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp. A varied diet supports immune health and intensifies coloration. Because of their small mouths, food should be appropriately sized to ensure easy consumption.

With proper care, Neon Tetras can live 5–8 years, offering long-term beauty and dynamic movement in planted aquariums. Their timeless appeal, manageable care requirements, and compatibility with aquascaped tanks make them a top choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists seeking a vibrant yet natural freshwater display.
