Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow'

Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow'

Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow’ is a refined and elegant variation of the classic Java Fern, prized in aquascaping for its slender, elongated leaves and graceful growth pattern. Native to Southeast Asia, this cultivar maintains the same hardy nature as the standard Microsorum pteropus, but stands out with its more delicate and streamlined appearance.

The defining feature of ‘Narrow’ is its thin, lance-shaped leaves, which grow longer and more compact compared to the broader leaves of the common Java Fern. These leaves emerge from a creeping rhizome and form dense clusters that create a soft, flowing visual effect in the aquarium. Its deep green coloration adds contrast and depth, especially when placed alongside broader-leaf or lighter-colored plants.

Like other Java Fern varieties, Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow’ should not be planted in the substrate. Instead, it thrives when attached to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape elements, allowing the rhizome to remain exposed and healthy. This makes it ideal for midground and background placements, particularly in nature-style and low-tech aquascapes.

This plant is extremely low-maintenance and adaptable, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and lighting levels. It grows slowly, requiring minimal pruning, and does not depend on CO₂ injection, although additional nutrients and CO₂ can enhance its growth and density. Propagation occurs through division of the rhizome or through plantlets that develop on mature leaves.

Beyond its aesthetic value, ‘Narrow’ provides shelter for fish and shrimp, contributing to a balanced and natural aquarium environment. Its elegant form and reliability make it a favorite choice for aquascapers seeking subtle texture and structure.
