Hemianthus micranthemoides

Hemianthus micranthemoides

Hemianthus micranthemoides, often referred to as Pearl Weed or Baby Tears (not to be confused with Hemianthus callitrichoides), is a delicate yet highly versatile aquatic stem plant widely appreciated in aquascaping. Native to North America, this species features small, bright green leaves arranged in opposite pairs along thin, flexible stems, creating a soft and vibrant texture inside the aquarium.

Under optimal conditions, Hemianthus micranthemoides develops dense, bushy growth with compact internodes, forming lush midground clusters or even low carpeting sections when regularly trimmed. Its fine leaf structure gives a sense of scale and depth, making it especially effective in nature-style and Dutch-style aquascapes. When grown with high light and sufficient CO₂ injection, the plant produces tight, compact foliage and may exhibit pearling — the formation of visible oxygen bubbles on the leaves — adding dynamic visual appeal.

In moderate lighting without CO₂ supplementation, Hemianthus micranthemoides grows taller with slightly elongated stems and wider spacing between leaves. While it remains attractive in low-tech setups, its most compact and vibrant form is achieved in high-energy planted aquariums with stable nutrient dosing.

This species thrives in temperatures between 20–28°C (68–82°F) and adapts well to a wide range of water parameters. Soft to moderately hard water is ideal, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH encouraging optimal growth. Regular trimming is essential to maintain a dense, bush-like appearance and to prevent shading of lower leaves. Cut stems can easily be replanted to propagate new growth, allowing aquascapers to shape and refine their layout over time.

Hemianthus micranthemoides is often used to create smooth transitions between foreground carpets and taller background stems. Its texture contrasts beautifully with broader-leaf plants such as Cryptocoryne species and adds softness next to hardscape elements like driftwood and natural stones. When allowed to grow freely, it can form gently flowing masses that sway subtly with water movement, creating a highly natural underwater effect.

Whether used as a compact midground bush, a trimmed hedge, or a semi-carpet plant, Hemianthus micranthemoides offers flexibility, brightness, and a refined sense of detail that enhances both small nano tanks and larger aquascapes.
