Hemigrammus erythrozonus
The Glowlight Tetra (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) is one of the most elegant and visually striking freshwater fish available for planted aquariums. Known for its slender translucent body and the vibrant red-orange stripe that runs from its snout to the base of its tail, this species creates a glowing effect under proper aquarium lighting. Native to the clear and slow-moving rivers of Guyana in South America, the Glowlight Tetra thrives in soft, slightly acidic water and heavily planted aquascapes that replicate its natural habitat.
Reaching an average size of about 3.5 to 4 cm (1.5 inches), the Glowlight Tetra is a peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six individuals, although larger schools of 10 or more provide a much more natural and impressive display. When kept in proper numbers, they exhibit confident swimming behavior and enhanced coloration, making them ideal for community aquariums.
In aquascaping, Glowlight Tetras stand out beautifully against dark substrates, driftwood, and lush green aquatic plants. Their glowing lateral stripe contrasts perfectly with mosses, stem plants, and background foliage such as Rotala, Ludwigia, and Vallisneria. Soft lighting with slightly tannin-stained water can intensify their warm coloration, while high-clarity planted tanks highlight their metallic sheen. They are especially effective in nature-style aquascapes, blackwater layouts, and Dutch-style planted tanks.
Glowlight Tetras prefer water temperatures between 24–28°C (75–82°F), with a pH range of 5.5–7.5. Stable parameters and gentle filtration are key to maintaining their health. Because they are sensitive to sudden water changes, a well-cycled aquarium with consistent maintenance routines is essential. They are omnivorous and accept high-quality micro pellets, flakes, frozen foods like daphnia and brine shrimp, and live foods that enhance their coloration and vitality.
One of the main reasons aquarists choose Glowlight Tetras is their compatibility. They coexist peacefully with other small tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras catfish, and shrimp species in well-balanced community tanks. Their calm temperament and manageable size make them perfect for nano aquariums starting from 60 liters (15 gallons), provided they are kept in schools.
In addition to their beauty, Glowlight Tetras are relatively hardy when provided with stable conditions, making them suitable for beginner aquarists while still appealing to experienced aquascapers who want dynamic schooling movement in their layouts. Their reflective stripe acts almost like a moving line of light through the plants, adding depth and motion to underwater compositions.
Whether you are building a biotope-inspired blackwater aquarium or a modern high-tech planted tank, the Glowlight Tetra remains a timeless choice. With proper care, a planted environment, and a well-maintained aquarium, this species will reward you with vibrant color, graceful schooling behavior, and a natural glow that elevates any aquascape design.
