Hyphessobrycon flammeus
The Flame Tetra (Hyphessobrycon flammeus), also known as the Von Rio Tetra or Red Tetra, is one of the most vibrant and charismatic freshwater fish available for planted aquariums. Native to coastal rivers of Brazil, this small schooling species is prized for its intense red-orange coloration, elegant black vertical markings, and translucent fins that glow under proper aquarium lighting. In a well-balanced aquascape, the Flame Tetra becomes a living focal point, contrasting beautifully against lush green aquatic plants
.
Growing to an average size of 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 inches), the Flame Tetra is ideal for nano tanks and medium-sized community aquariums. Males typically display deeper red tones, especially when in breeding condition, while females are slightly rounder with more subtle coloration. Their compact body shape and smooth swimming behavior make them particularly attractive in nature-style aquascapes inspired by South American biotopes.
Flame Tetras thrive in planted aquariums with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) and temperatures between 22–28°C (72–82°F). Stable water parameters are essential for maintaining their vibrant coloration. A dark substrate, driftwood, and dense aquatic plants such as Rotala, Ludwigia, and mosses enhance their natural red tones while providing security and reducing stress.
As a peaceful schooling fish, Flame Tetras should be kept in groups of at least six individuals, though larger groups of 10 or more create more natural behavior and stronger visual impact. When kept in proper numbers, they display synchronized swimming patterns that add dynamic movement to aquascapes.
Diet plays a crucial role in coloration and health. A varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, flakes, frozen foods like daphnia and bloodworms, and occasional live foods will intensify their red pigmentation and support immune health. In planted aquariums with good lighting and CO₂ supplementation, the contrast between bright red bodies and vibrant green plants creates a striking, professional aquascape appearance.
Breeding Flame Tetras is possible in soft, slightly acidic water with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. They are egg scatterers, and adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Thanks to their manageable size, peaceful temperament, and intense coloration, Flame Tetras are an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquascapers alike. Whether featured in a minimalist Iwagumi layout or a dense jungle-style aquascape, they bring warmth, movement, and natural beauty to freshwater planted tanks.
