Ember Tetra

Hyphessobrycon amandae

The Ember Tetra is a small but striking freshwater fish that has become a favorite among aquascaping enthusiasts. Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of central Brazil, this species is admired for its intense orange to reddish coloration and peaceful schooling behavior. Despite its tiny size, the Ember Tetra delivers a powerful visual impact, especially in well-designed planted aquariums.

Reaching only about 2 cm (0.8 inches) in length, the Ember Tetra is considered a true nano fish. Its slender, slightly translucent body glows in shades ranging from warm amber to deep fiery orange, depending on diet, lighting, and water conditions. The fins are delicate and often display subtle reddish tones, giving the fish a soft yet vibrant appearance. Under natural aquarium lighting, their bodies seem to radiate warmth, creating a beautiful contrast against green aquatic plants and darker substrates.

Because of their small size and gentle temperament, Ember Tetras thrive in groups of at least 8 to 10 individuals. In larger schools, they display more confident behavior and form loose, synchronized shoals that move gracefully through midwater. This natural schooling dynamic adds life and motion to aquascapes without overwhelming the layout.

Ember Tetras prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with temperatures between 23–28°C (73–82°F). Stable water parameters are essential due to their delicate size. A planted aquarium with fine-leaved stems, mosses, and floating plants closely mimics their natural habitat, which consists of calm waters rich in leaf litter and submerged vegetation. Dimmed lighting or the use of tannins can further enhance their coloration and reduce stress.

Feeding is straightforward, as they accept high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small live or frozen foods. A varied diet enhances their color intensity and supports overall health. Because of their tiny mouths, food size should always be appropriate.

In community aquariums, Ember Tetras pair well with other peaceful nano species such as small rasboras, Corydoras, dwarf shrimp, and gentle dwarf cichlids. Their calm nature makes them unsuitable for tanks with large or aggressive fish.

For aquascapers seeking a vibrant yet subtle fish that complements intricate planted layouts, the Ember Tetra is an outstanding choice. Its glowing orange body creates a warm focal point within lush greenery, making it ideal for nature-style, Iwagumi, and nano aquascapes alike.
