Catalaphyllia jardinei
The Elegance Coral (Catalaphyllia jardinei) is one of the most striking and recognizable LPS corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Known for its large fleshy polyps, flowing tentacles, and vibrant coloration, this coral instantly becomes a centerpiece in marine aquariums. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly Australia and Indonesia, Elegance Coral naturally inhabits sandy reef flats and lagoon environments where gentle currents and stable conditions allow it to thrive.
Elegance Coral features a large oval or cone-shaped skeleton topped by an expansive fleshy mantle covered in long tentacles. These tentacles often have slightly bulbous or pointed tips and can extend dramatically during the day, giving the coral a soft, waving appearance as they move with the water flow. Under reef aquarium lighting, Elegance Coral commonly displays beautiful shades of green, teal, purple, pink, or cream, often with glowing fluorescent tips.
In reef aquariums, Elegance Coral belongs to the LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral group, meaning it builds a calcium carbonate skeleton while maintaining thick, fleshy tissue that expands outward. Much of the coral’s energy comes from its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which perform photosynthesis under aquarium lighting. However, Elegance Coral also benefits from occasional feeding of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or reef blends.
Elegance Coral prefers moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow. Too much direct flow can cause the tentacles to retract, while very low flow may allow debris to settle on the coral’s tissue. A gentle, indirect current helps keep the coral healthy while allowing its tentacles to move naturally.
Stable water parameters are essential for the long-term success of this coral. Ideal reef tank conditions include:
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Temperature: 24–26°C (75–79°F)
Low nitrate and phosphate levels
Elegance Coral is considered semi-aggressive, as it can extend long sweeper tentacles capable of stinging nearby corals. Because of this, it should be given ample space in the aquascape, typically placed on the sandbed where it can expand without contacting other corals.
When properly cared for, Elegance Coral can grow large and display impressive polyp extension, creating a dramatic and elegant movement in reef aquariums. Its graceful tentacles, vibrant fluorescence, and flowing structure make it one of the most visually captivating corals available to reef aquarists.
For hobbyists looking to add a showpiece coral with movement, color, and personality, the Elegance Coral is a stunning addition to any well-maintained reef aquarium.
Ensure your aquarium is well-established with stable water parameters before introducing Elegance Coral.
Gradually acclimate the coral to your tank's conditions to minimize stress and prevent shock.
Install lighting that delivers a PAR of 80-120 to support the coral's photosynthetic needs.
Ensure moderate, indirect water flow to mimic the coral's natural environment and prevent tissue damage.
Offer meaty foods like mysis shrimp and brine shrimp a couple of times a week to promote health and growth.
Regularly check and maintain stable water conditions, including temperature, salinity, pH, alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium levels.
Maintain water temperature between 76-80°F (24-27°C), salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1-8.4, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, calcium levels between 400-450 ppm, and magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm.
Elegance Corals benefit from direct feeding with meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, copepods, and daphnia. Target feeding a couple of times a week can enhance growth.
Provide moderate lighting with a PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) of 80-120. Suitable light sources include LEDs and fluorescent lights.
Acclimate Elegance Coral slowly to prevent stress. Float the coral in the tank to equalize temperature, then gradually mix tank water into the coral's container over 15-20 minutes before placing it in the aquarium.
A minimum tank size of 30 gallons (approximately 114 liters) is recommended to accommodate the coral's growth and provide adequate space.
Elegance Corals are semi-aggressive and may sting nearby corals. It's best to place them in areas with sufficient space to prevent contact with other corals.
Propagation of Elegance Coral is challenging and not recommended for beginners. It requires precise techniques and conditions to be successful.
