Cryptocoryne undulatus 'Red'

Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ is a beautiful and distinctive aquarium plant prized in aquascaping for its wavy leaves and rich reddish coloration. Native to Sri Lanka, this species naturally grows along riverbanks, slow-moving streams, and periodically flooded forest areas where the substrate is rich in organic matter and water conditions remain relatively stable.

The defining feature of Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ is its elongated leaves with pronounced undulating edges, which give the plant its name. The foliage typically displays a mix of deep green, bronze, and reddish tones, with the red coloration becoming more intense under stronger lighting and stable nutrient conditions. The undersides of the leaves often show deeper reddish hues, creating an attractive contrast within planted aquariums.

In aquascaping, Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ is commonly used as a midground plant, though it can also function as a foreground accent in larger aquariums or as a background plant in nano tanks. Its upright growth and textured leaves add both structure and visual depth to planted layouts. When planted in small groups, it forms natural clusters that blend well with rocks, driftwood, and other aquatic plants.

Unlike rhizome plants such as Anubias or Bucephalandra, Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ is a root-feeding plant and should be planted directly into the aquarium substrate. A nutrient-rich substrate greatly benefits this species, encouraging stronger root development and healthier foliage. In aquariums using inert substrates, the addition of root tabs can help provide the nutrients needed for sustained growth.

This plant grows well under low to medium lighting, making it suitable for a wide range of aquarium setups. While CO₂ injection is not strictly necessary, it can promote more vigorous growth and enhance the plant’s coloration. Stable water parameters and consistent aquarium maintenance are generally more important for the plant’s long-term health than high lighting levels.

Like many Cryptocoryne species, Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ may experience “crypt melt” when first introduced into a new aquarium or when water parameters change suddenly. During this phase, some leaves may deteriorate, but the root system usually remains intact. With stable conditions, the plant will produce new leaves that are adapted to the aquarium environment.

Propagation occurs through subterranean runners, which produce small plantlets near the base of the parent plant. Over time, these runners allow the plant to form dense clusters across the substrate. Aquascapers often separate and replant these runners to control the layout and expand planting areas within the aquascape.

From a design perspective, Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ adds warm color and natural texture to planted aquariums. Its reddish tones contrast beautifully with bright green carpeting plants such as Monte Carlo or dwarf hairgrass, while also complementing darker plants like Bucephalandra or Anubias. This versatility makes it a valuable addition to both nature-style aquascapes and lush planted layouts.

Overall, Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ is a hardy and visually striking aquarium plant that combines ease of care with attractive coloration and elegant leaf texture. Its adaptability and natural growth habit make it an excellent choice for aquarists looking to create balanced and visually rich planted aquariums.
