Congo Tetra

Phenacogrammus interruptus

Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is one of the most spectacular freshwater fish available for planted aquariums. Native to the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, this species is admired for its intense iridescence, elegant finnage, and peaceful schooling behavior. When kept under proper lighting in a well-maintained aquascape, the Congo tetra displays a breathtaking spectrum of metallic blues, violets, turquoise, and warm orange-gold tones that shift dynamically as it swims.

Adult males are especially striking. They develop extended dorsal, anal, and caudal fins with delicate trailing edges that give them a graceful, flowing silhouette. Their bodies are laterally compressed yet elongated, creating a refined profile that stands out beautifully against lush green aquatic plants. Females are slightly smaller, rounder in body shape, and display more subtle coloration, making sexual dimorphism relatively easy to identify in mature groups.

In aquascaping layouts, Congo tetras work exceptionally well in nature-style or jungle-style planted tanks. Their shimmering coloration contrasts perfectly with dark driftwood, dense stem plants, moss-covered hardscape, and shadowed backgrounds. When placed in a heavily planted aquarium with soft, slightly tinted water and subdued lighting, their colors become deeper and more saturated, enhancing the natural aesthetic of the layout.

This species thrives in soft to moderately soft water with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Stable parameters are essential for maintaining both health and coloration. Ideal temperatures range between 23°C and 27°C (73°F to 81°F). Gentle water flow mimics their natural habitat and allows them to display natural schooling behavior without stress. Providing open swimming space in the midwater column while maintaining planted areas along the sides and background creates the perfect balance for this active yet peaceful fish.

Congo tetras are omnivorous and benefit from a varied diet. High-quality flakes or micro pellets can be supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. A protein-rich and diversified diet significantly enhances their iridescent sheen and fin development, particularly in males.

Because they are schooling fish, Congo tetras should always be kept in groups of at least six individuals, though larger groups of eight to twelve produce more natural behavior and more impressive visual impact. In larger aquascapes, a well-sized school creates dynamic movement that brings the entire aquarium to life.

Peaceful and community-friendly, they coexist well with other calm species of similar size. However, very small fish or fin-nipping tank mates should be avoided to preserve their elegant finnage. With proper care, they can live for five years or more, making them a long-term highlight in planted aquariums.

For aquarists seeking a colorful yet natural-looking centerpiece fish that complements aquascaping layouts, the Congo tetra remains one of the finest choices in the freshwater hobby.
