Congo Tetra

Phenacogrammus interruptus

The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is one of the most spectacular freshwater fish available in the aquarium hobby. Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, this species inhabits slow-moving rivers, forest streams, and flooded areas rich in vegetation. Known for its shimmering rainbow-like coloration and elegant flowing fins, the Congo Tetra is a favorite among aquarists who want a striking centerpiece fish for larger planted aquariums.

One of the most remarkable features of the Congo Tetra is its iridescent body coloration, which reflects a mix of blue, violet, gold, and orange hues depending on the lighting and viewing angle. Males are especially stunning, displaying long, flowing fins and extended dorsal and tail filaments that give them a graceful, almost regal appearance. Females are generally smaller and less colorful but still retain the beautiful silvery tones typical of the species.

Congo Tetras are larger than most tetra species and can grow up to 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) in length. Because of their size and active swimming behavior, they require spacious aquariums with plenty of open swimming space. Like most tetras, they are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals, although larger schools of 8–10 fish create a much more impressive and natural display.

This species prefers stable water conditions similar to those found in their natural African habitat. Ideal parameters include temperatures between 23–27°C (73–81°F) and a pH range of 6.0–7.5. Slightly soft to moderately hard water works well, and maintaining high water quality through regular water changes is important for keeping their colors vibrant.

A planted aquarium with subdued lighting and open swimming areas works best for Congo Tetras. In the wild, they inhabit waters surrounded by vegetation and fallen branches that create shaded areas. Aquascapes that include plants such as Vallisneria, Amazon swords, Java fern, and floating plants can replicate this natural environment. Floating plants help diffuse the lighting, which often enhances their iridescent colors.

Congo Tetras are generally peaceful community fish and can coexist with many other calm species. Suitable tank mates include rainbowfish, peaceful barbs, larger tetras, Corydoras catfish, dwarf cichlids, and small to medium-sized gouramis. Because of their long fins, they should not be kept with aggressive or fin-nipping species that may damage their delicate finnage.

In terms of diet, Congo Tetras are omnivores and easy to feed. They readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and granules, but their coloration and health improve when their diet includes live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and bloodworms. A varied diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration and encourages natural activity.

Breeding Congo Tetras in captivity is possible but requires specific conditions. They are egg scatterers and typically spawn among plants in slightly softer water. A breeding setup with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops can help protect the eggs. After spawning, adults should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs.

With their shimmering rainbow colors, graceful swimming style, and peaceful temperament, Congo Tetras are one of the most impressive species for larger freshwater aquariums. When kept in a proper school within a spacious, well-planted tank, they create a stunning visual display that adds movement and elegance to any aquascape.
