Black Skirt Tetra

Gymnocorymbus ternetzi

The Black Skirt Tetra, scientifically known as Gymnocorymbus ternetzi, is a popular freshwater schooling fish widely appreciated in planted aquariums and aquascapes. Native to slow-moving rivers and tributaries in South America, particularly in Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, this species thrives in calm waters filled with submerged vegetation, driftwood, and soft substrates. Its natural habitat strongly influences how it behaves and how it should be kept in captivity.

The most recognizable feature of the Black Skirt Tetra is its tall, laterally compressed body combined with its distinctive black vertical bands. Juveniles display two prominent dark bars near the front half of the body, along with a smoky, translucent silver background. As the fish matures, the contrast can soften slightly, but the elegant black “skirt” formed by the extended anal fin remains a defining characteristic. The dorsal and anal fins are elongated and flowing, giving the fish a graceful, almost dramatic silhouette when swimming in groups.

Adult Black Skirt Tetras typically reach around 5 to 6 centimeters in length. They are active midwater swimmers and feel most secure when kept in schools of at least six individuals, although larger groups of ten or more produce more natural and synchronized movement. In a well-balanced aquascape, their coordinated swimming creates dynamic contrast against lush green carpeting plants, moss-covered driftwood, or tall background stems.

This species adapts well to a wide range of water parameters. Ideal conditions include temperatures between 22°C and 28°C, a pH range from slightly acidic to neutral, and moderate hardness. They are hardy and suitable for beginners, but they show their best coloration and behavior in stable, well-maintained environments with regular water changes and gentle filtration.

Black Skirt Tetras are generally peaceful, making them excellent community fish. However, they may exhibit mild fin-nipping behavior if kept in small groups or housed with slow-moving, long-finned tank mates. In larger schools, this behavior tends to diminish significantly, as their social energy is directed toward interacting within their own group.

In terms of diet, they are omnivorous and accept a variety of foods, including high-quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms and daphnia, and occasional live foods. A varied diet enhances their coloration, vitality, and overall longevity. With proper care, they can live up to five years or more in a well-maintained aquarium.

In aquascaping layouts, Black Skirt Tetras are particularly effective in nature-style and biotope-inspired setups. Their contrasting dark tones stand out beautifully against vibrant green plants like Micranthemum tweediei ‘Monte Carlo’, Rotala rotundifolia, or moss species such as Taxiphyllum and Vesicularia. Their constant movement adds life and visual rhythm to the aquascape without overpowering the composition.

Overall, the Black Skirt Tetra is a resilient, visually striking freshwater fish that combines elegance, adaptability, and compatibility. Whether used in a beginner planted tank or a carefully designed aquascape, this species remains a timeless choice for aquarists seeking movement, contrast, and classic South American charm.
