Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi
The Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a popular freshwater aquarium fish known for its striking contrast of dark and iridescent colors. Native to the Paraguay River basin in Brazil and Paraguay, this peaceful schooling fish is a favorite among aquascaping enthusiasts due to its elegant appearance and active behavior. Despite its name, it is not closely related to the classic Neon Tetra but shares a similar body shape and schooling habits.
Black Neon Tetras are easily recognizable by their distinct horizontal stripe pattern. A shimmering white or silvery-green stripe runs along the top of the body, while a bold velvety black stripe runs beneath it from the gill plate to the tail. Their upper body has subtle olive tones, and their eyes often display a hint of orange or red. When kept in a well-lit planted aquarium, their colors become especially vibrant.
In aquariums, Black Neon Tetras typically grow to around 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 inches) in length. They thrive when kept in groups of at least 6–10 individuals, as schooling helps them feel secure and encourages natural behavior. In larger schools, their synchronized swimming creates beautiful movement that enhances planted aquascapes.
These fish are known for being hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They prefer soft to moderately hard water and temperatures between 22–28°C (72–82°F). Slightly acidic to neutral water conditions (pH 5.5–7.5) mimic their natural habitat and help maintain their health and coloration.
A densely planted aquarium works best for Black Neon Tetras. In the wild, they inhabit areas with submerged vegetation, roots, and shaded waters. Replicating this environment with plants such as Java Moss, Anubias, Cryptocoryne, and stem plants will help them feel comfortable. Adding driftwood and darker substrate can also enhance their colors and create a more natural setting.
Black Neon Tetras are peaceful community fish and get along well with many other small species. Good tank mates include rasboras, other tetras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras catfish, and small gouramis. Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive fish that may view them as food.
When it comes to feeding, they are omnivorous and not picky eaters. A varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms will keep them healthy and enhance their coloration.
Breeding Black Neon Tetras in captivity is possible but requires controlled conditions. They are egg scatterers that prefer soft, slightly acidic water and dim lighting during spawning. Fine-leaved plants or spawning mops can help protect the eggs. After spawning, adults should be removed since they may eat the eggs.
Because of their hardiness, peaceful nature, and striking contrast of colors, Black Neon Tetras are a fantastic addition to planted aquariums and aquascapes. When kept in a proper school within a natural-looking tank, they provide constant motion and visual interest.
